In 2013 Ngāti Pareraukawa and Muaūpoko established a working party to restore our relationship with the stream and the lake. We committed to working together for a complete restoration of both water bodies. In the 1980s Ran Jacob chaired a group called the Muaūpoko Pareraukawa Action Committee which worked to have the sewage effluent removed from the lake. This was achieved in the late 1980s, however those responsible for the pollution of the lake and stream (mainly the Horowhenua Council) continue to discharge into the lake and this has ongoing negative impacts. There is significant community support for a cleanup of the lake. We enjoyed two planting days on the banks of the stream in August resulting on a thousand plants being put in the ground on the southern bank. It was great fun.
